The other poster is using google groups to access usenet. We're using a
news server that doesn't seem to be retaining all of the older posts.
Retention times do vary between servers, alas.

Actually I may have miss read this. The OP is right that E Sept has
some limits to how long they retain messages, so if you only
load headers into your reader, you will eventually not be able
to go back for the message itself. Maybe, if you have large
free disk space, and the desire, the solution is to download headers
and content ie local retention.

Or ... download Hamster:

http://tglsoft.de/freeware_hamster.html

and set up your own mailserver on your local machine which draws from as
many usenet servers as you wish to configure. Then point your newsreader
to that local server. Been using this for 15 years or more. It also
allows you too some handy-dandy filtering to get rid of trolls and other
twerps.

(Don't worry about the German language: the zip file contains an English
version too).

Not informative enough. What virus software? What unzip programme?

I just downloaded the latest version and 'unzipped' it with WinRAR on a
machine using Avast free with no warnings whatsoever. Will my computer now
die? Am I pwned?

It's fine here with AVG free (which is Avast these days anyway).
And like I say, I've been using it for years - it's a legit source. I
think you have a false positive.

Did it say which particular file it objects to - there are quite a few
in the zip?

You could try turning off heuristic and see if that gives you a
different result.

I don't think so;
"problem is eternal-september, and aioe doesn't carry this ng".

Yep, a few months or so, maybe half-a-year.

Yep - or use a paid service. It's the old adage, you get what you pay for
(either in cash money of HDD costs).

Actually I take that back. I just subbed to a 'new' group (using E Sept) and
they had 45K posts going back to 2011. So in some cases they have six-year
retention.

True, but this is for the big hierarchy groups - rec, soc, comp etc. The alt
groups - like this one here - have much shorter retention times.

You could well be right. It was a sci. group.
